Researchers say that any detectable levels of benzene in sunscreen up to 2 parts per million should be cause for concern. The recall includes all can sizes and all levels of sun protection factor, or SPF. Samples of four Neutrogena and one Aveeno spray sunscreen products tested positive for benzene, which is not an ingredient in sunscreen. The affected products, packaged in aerosol cans, are Aveeno Protect + Refresh aerosol sunscreen, and four Neutrogena sunscreen versions: Beach Defense aerosol sunscreen, CoolDry Sport aerosol sunscreen, Invisible Daily Defense aerosol sunscreen and UltraSheer aerosol sunscreen. Benzene is a sweet-smelling, petroleum-derived toxic chemical widely recognized as causing cancer and other serious health effects, with no safe level for human exposure.
